Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Poll: 72 vs 74

I was curious which of these years is more popular....
'72-74 is regarded as one of the Dead's best eras - but not every year is alike, they changed quite a bit from Europe '72 to Winterland '74.
'73 would probably win most polls, but I'm leaving it out of this poll. (There was a 73 vs 74 thread a while ago, too.)

Some fans hold that '72 shows have more energy & excitement - others argue the setlists are more limited and there's less jamming material.
Some say that '74 is unrivaled in its jazziness & explorations - others claim that the Dead sound frazzled and burned-out that year.

Where do you stand?

74 all day.

Also I believe 74 would blow the doors of 73 had they played as many shows.

1st sets 72, 2nd sets 74.

WOTF pushes 74 over the top.

pure, down 2 earth, jazzy jamming perfectionism of 74 doesnt match the bluesy power and the true kozmik energy generated in 72

i say 72

I am partial to all 70`s....I love the "sound" of 74,but I enjoy the 72 set lists maybe a little more. But like I said, give me anything from 70 to 78 and I could pass time comfortably...

well, as far as the music's concerned, i would have to agree and say '74 because of Winterland and Freedom Hall and the whole European tour, but 72' still had something '74 doesn't, PIGPEN. In very bad health i know, but still there's not enough blues in '74 for me. But i will be happy listening to any year as long as i'm living.

Seeing the subject line, I instinctively said to myself, "74!" Much more power, imagination and confidence (for most of the year) than 72. Though they did play tighter and sing better in 72, I think. But apart from a few late summer shows, 72 doesn't carry me away as far or as effectively as much of 74.

Nice question to pose.

i still dig the exploration straight forward jam of playing in the band 72" as opposed to the spacey 74 playing in the band. really tough question. although i really love the 72 jerry/merl band!!~ that rocked in its own way.

I remember doin some of that liqL back in those day... Boy Howdy = "did I scream" w/ heavy trails.

how can judge those two years. The best part about 74 was THE WAR IS OVER !

i tend to go for 72, there is the amazing Europe run, then the late summer dreamy dark stars and bird songs, the september runs tend to have back to back battles night in and night of dark star or other ones, and every night the break out with great if nit the best Playin jams these ears will hear.

Wow - I didn't expect to see '74 win by such a landslide....
I go more for '72 myself, by a nose....there's Pigpen still, there's more energy, titanic jams - volcanic Playings, revelatory Other Ones, and a heap more Dark Stars....
But then in '74 there's those long jams that come out of Truckin' or Let It Grow, or out of nowhere....
It's a bit sad that Bird Song and Sunshine were both abandoned in '74 - along with Dark Stars becoming scarce, that meant most of the jamming came in Weir's songs, strangely enough.
Weir said he felt they were getting too inverted in '74, playing self-indulgent jams that the audience couldn't relate to....

It's a tough choice, but I'd go with 1974.
In large part due to the more expansive jams, but also the WTOF material.

I gotta go with '74. Like Dewd said....Wake of the Flood!!! Also, the Mars Hotel stuff was starting to be worked in also. Love the Weather Reports from this period.
That is one that I wish they hadn't dropped from the rotation....that and Here Comes Sunshine also. Two tunes right there that make '74 head and shoulders above '72 in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that when I go to the shelves I pull out a 74 show more often than a 72. It might be interesting to know whether age comes into this. Do younger fans prefer 72 over 74 ? For the record I'm 55. (Hmm does that make me a younger or an older fan ?)

For me 1974 is better only because the dead doesn't start for me until 73. I know that's criminal especially because of the epic shows prior to that, but the 73 jazz stuff is what hooked me

1972 morphs into 1973 - we were still thinkin' about Pig
1973 is The Wild Year - and birth of The Wall of Sound proto-type
1974 is the climax of the Wall of Sound era
I think these 3 years are inseperable

I think the band was better in 72. They were much tighter vocally, and the jams were more effective imo. I just prefer a 8/27 Playin, a 9/21 Birdsong, or a 9/28/72 GSET to the extended, more jazzy jams from 1974. I also like Pig's contribution during the first 1/2 of the year. I would take the set-lists from 74, but just too much drop-off in overall quality to take the year as a whole (vs 72).
